What Are Double Glazed Windows?
Double glazed windows have two sheets of glass with a sealed gap between them, set in one frame. Heat and cold pass through them more slowly than through a single sheet. Ours are aluminium windows that open as awning, sliding or casement windows. The ML102-TB awning window adds a thermal break, an insulating strip through the frame. We measure and install double glazed windows in Melbourne's south and east, and on the Mornington Peninsula.
Quick Facts
- Every window we sell is aluminium and double glazed.
- Our ML102-TB awning window has a thermal break, an insulating strip through the frame.
- We supply them to AS 2047, the Australian Standard for windows, and AS 1288, the Standard for glass.

Info · Single vs double glazing
Single Glazing Or Double Glazing?
A lot of older Melbourne homes still have one sheet of glass in each window. Double glazing puts two sheets in the frame with a sealed gap between them.
Is It Right For Your House?
- Does your house get cold in winter, even with the heater on?
- Does it get hot in summer, with the sun beating through the glass?
- Do you hear trains or trams going past, or planes going over?
- Do you live near a freeway or a busy road?
- Do your windows fog up or drip on cold mornings?
- Do your heater and air con run all day to keep up?
If you said yes to any of these, double glazing is worth a quote.

- Single glazing
- The glass goes cold, and so does the room beside it.
- Double glazing
- The sealed gap keeps the cold on the outside pane.
Pick How Your Windows Open
Every one of these is aluminium and double glazed. The difference is the way the window opens, and which frame series it comes in.

- Kitchens and bathrooms

Awning Windows
Hinged along the top. Turn the winder, a small crank handle, and the bottom pushes out.
Room it needs outside
Some. The bottom of the window leans out.
- Double glazed
- Thermal break option, an insulating strip in the ML102-TB frame
- Opens with a winder, easy to reach across a bench
- Onto paths, decks and verandahs

Sliding Windows
One pane, called a sash, slides sideways on a track.
Room it needs outside
None. Nothing swings out into the path.
- Double glazed
- Our ML86 and ML102 sliding windows have no thermal break
- Can sit over or beside fixed panes
- Spots with room outside

Casement Windows
Hinged down one side, so it swings out like a door.
Room it needs outside
The most. The whole window swings out.
- Double glazed
- Our casement windows are ML102, without a thermal break
- Siegenia Aubi handle as standard
What The Frame Does
Double glazing looks after the glass. The frame is the other half of the window. In a lot of older Melbourne homes it's aluminium or timber, holding a single sheet of glass.
Solid aluminium carries cold straight through from the outside face of the frame to the inside face. A thermally broken aluminium window has its frame split into an outside half and an inside half. The two halves are joined by an insulating strip called a thermal break. The strip stops the cold outside travelling through the metal into your room.
In our range the thermally broken series is ML102-TB. In windows it comes as an awning window, and in doors as a sliding door and a casement door.

Your Choice Of Glass
You choose the glass. Low-E glass has a thin coating that reflects heat, and argon filled glass has a heavy gas sealed in the gap between the panes. Laminated glass holds together if it breaks, acoustic glass is laminated with a layer that damps sound, and tinted glass cuts glare. Our guide to glass options for double glazing explains each one.
Glass To Suit Each Room
A double glazed window takes two panes, and you choose the glass. We supply low-E, argon filled, laminated, acoustic and tinted glass.
Low-E glass has a very thin coating that reflects heat. Argon is a gas heavier than air, used to fill the sealed gap between the panes. Laminated glass has a clear plastic layer bonded between two sheets, so it holds together if it breaks.
Our guide to low-E glass and the other glass options explains each one and the rooms it suits.

Houses, Apartments And New Builds
We work across south and east Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, and we don't cover the western suburbs.
Apartments and strata buildings are fine. In a strata building the body corporate, the owners group that runs the building, may need to approve the work first.
We also supply and install windows for small builders and owner-builders. On a new build, our install team usually has them in within a day to a day and a half.
