Retrofit Double Glazing Melbourne, And Which Kind We Do

Retrofit double glazing in Melbourne means adding double glazing to a home that's already built.

People use the word for two different jobs. We do the one where the whole window is replaced, frame and glass together.

What Is Retrofit Double Glazing?

Retrofit double glazing is double glazing added to a home that's already built. The word covers two jobs. One is fitting new double glazed glass into your existing frames. The other is replacing the whole window, frame and glass, with a new double glazed window in the same opening. We do the second kind, in aluminium.

Why We Replace The Whole Window

Info · Single vs double glazing

Single Glazing Or Double Glazing?

A lot of older Melbourne homes still have one sheet of glass in each window. Double glazing puts two sheets in the frame with a sealed gap between them.

Is It Right For Your House?

  • Does your house get cold in winter, even with the heater on?
  • Does it get hot in summer, with the sun beating through the glass?
  • Do you hear trains or trams going past, or planes going over?
  • Do you live near a freeway or a busy road?
  • Do your windows fog up or drip on cold mornings?
  • Do your heater and air con run all day to keep up?

If you said yes to any of these, double glazing is worth a quote.

How A Whole-Window Retrofit Runs

  1. Send Your Count

Tell us how many windows you have, your suburb and a few photos. We come back with a ballpark.

  2. We Measure

We measure every window ourselves, because each new one is made to fit its opening. You get a ballpark on the spot.

  3. You Confirm The Order

Once you sign off the drawings, the windows go in 8 to 10 weeks later.

  4. Our Team Fits Them

Our install team of qualified carpenters takes the old windows out and fits the new ones.

Council Permits And Strata

You don't need council approval for like-for-like replacement, which means new windows going into the same openings as the old ones.

The exception is a home under a heritage overlay, a council rule that protects how older buildings and streets look. Under Clause 43.01 of the Victorian Planning Provisions, you need a permit to change the outside of a building in an overlay. That normally covers replacing windows, and your council can tell you if your home has one.

In a strata building, the body corporate, the owners group that runs the building, may need to approve the work first.
